In 2000, Peter Fedele and Mary Maguire, both general contractors were invited to visit 9 Miles by Cedella Marley Booker, Bob Marley's mother and the matriarch of the village. When they saw the condition of the existing Basic School they knew that help was desperately needed. In 2001, they completed the 1st classroom. By 2004, the school had almost 40 pupils, so they built the Pavilion and set up charities in both the US and Jamaica to fund future growth/projects. The Golden Sands Charitable Foundation is a registered 501(c) charity in the United States and all donations are tax deductible. It funds the 9 Mile Charitable Foundation, which is a registered Jamaican charity.
Since 2004, the charities have completed two additional classrooms, a school office, storage
rooms, a tuck shop, bathrooms with waterless toilets and urinals, indoor and outdoor kitchens,
and 10,000 gallons of rainwater storage tanks.
The charity has expanded its work to include assisting U.R.G.E. (www.tuffgong.com) and
Integrated Clinics International (www.icihealth.org ) to stage at least 2 health fair days per year.
We also assist the local farming community. With the assistance of RADA (Rural Agricultural
Development Authority) the very first tractor was donated to the community. The winter of
2009/2010 most of Jamaica experienced extreme drought conditions and 9 Mile (also known as
"Dry Valley") suffered with no local water. We are now working with Ghetto Youth
International sponsorship for water storage tanks..
